How is God Answering Your Prayers?

Sometimes, we pray for help, and help comes in ways we don’t recognize.  Two days ago, my husband lost a set of keys.  I prayed, from the twin convictions that God knew where the keys were—since God knows all–and that He would be pleased to help us when we asked.

Within a minute, my husband found the keys in a place where he had already looked a number of times. It was clear to us that God had answered our prayers, and how, and when.  However, sometimes we pray, and we’re not sure if God is working on it or planning to respond in a different way than we ever expected.  Consider this old story.

A man named John hears a flood is coming.  It has been raining heavily, and his house is expected to be flooded.  John prays, in faith, for God to save him and his dog.  The floodwaters reach his front door and begin to wash in.  A boat comes by, and people call to John to jump to the boat with his dog; they will save him and the dog.  John says, “No, God is going to save us!”  He and the dog go to the second floor.  John prays again for God to save them.  Another boat comes by, and people urgently call to John to jump in with his dog and be saved.  John says, “No, God is going to save us!”  Now he and the dog have to go to the roof, and John prays again for God to save them.  A helicopter appears, as if from nowhere, and a rope is lowered.  A National Guard officer shouts to John, over the sound of the blades, rain and driving wind, to take the rope and bring his dog under his arm.  John shouts back, in total faith, that God is going to save them.  Shortly, John and his dog are dripping wet in Heaven’s waiting room.  When it is their turn to meet God, God starts to ask John questions, when John, feeling betrayed, cries out in pain, “God, why did you not save us from the flood???”  God says, “My son, I sent two boats and a helicopter for both of you!”

When you last prayed for help, did you get a clear answer?  Or did you later realize you had what you needed, somehow?  What good information, people, reassurance, resources, boats, helicopters, and ropes has God been putting your way?  God wants to be in relationship with you, and God wants to hear from you, whether you have heard Him replying, or not.  Practice talking to God and listening for His responses.  Now you’re in Upbeat Spiritual Living!

I agree that too often we are focused on us- and not the answers that surround us.
